The nine branet executive and longtime leader of the North Carolina Bankers Association, Coburn, was buried Tuesday in Whiteville after a funeral officiated by Pastor Foley. He served on numerous committees and held top roles in the Carolina Bankers Association, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and related civic groups. He leaves a wife and several children, including a Salem actuary. The burial followed a week of tributes from colleagues across the banking community.

Acquittals And Guilty Plea In Arson Case
A Columbus County superior court jury acquitted Mrs Gussie Prince and Ellen Lawson of Tabor City on arson charges in a case tied to the burning of a vehicle last September. Thomas C Skipper pleaded guilty to arson and testified that Prince hired him to burn the car with Lawson’s help. Judge J Paul Frizette gave Skipper a two year suspended sentence and probation for five years. All three were indicted after an investigation by a North Carolina Insurance Commissioner’s office.

Ruby Cartrette died Sunday in Columbus County Hospital Whiteville from pneumonia following measles. Funeral services were held Monday at Welcome Free Will Baptist Church Lo’leck by Rev Willie Lewis. Burial was in McPherson Cemetery. Surviving are her parents two brothers Ernest and Welles two sisters Annie Lee and Mary and paternal grandmother Cartrette.
