Residents on Whiteville Rural Route 3 gain extended mail delivery due to new homes along Rural Pay. Post Office adds a second stop to serve five new residences, creating at home delivery on Termite Street. Some patrons report delays and no mailbox access previously, marking first time full curbside service in the extended area.
Officials plan a county-wide crackdown on gambling and whiskey traffic after a Whiteville raid netted 24 people. Daily Bible study courses and Sunday operations are noted, with enforcement promising searches and seizures where warranted.
A Tabor City man was sentenced to 3 to 5 years on manslaughter charges in Whiteville after a shooting at a home known locally as the Batten. Charles Person was charged with first degree murder but a court reduced the charge to manslaughter following a December shooting in the same community.
About 400 teachers and school officials from seven districts in Brunswick Columbus Robeson Fairmont Lamberton Whiteville attended the NEA area meeting at Williams in North Carolina. The two-session program covered home economics and cafeteria activities with speakers including Donald H Marrow discussing tentative proposals for the teachers' requirement system.

Mareld Ward and Mrs J A Herlocker are named co chairmen of the 1963 Heart Fund drive in Tabowly. The drive begins Sunday February 24 with volunteers countywide collecting from neighbors.
About 150 employees are to be hired at Nu idea Aluminum Furniture Co. as production starts in temporary quarters on Broad Street. The plant will expand from 50 to 150 workers including women in the weaving dept. and add machinery. A Small Business Administration loan seeks to fund 92,000 bonds by Loris Industrial Developers to build permanent quarters costing 460,000, with a target completion by July 1.
James Rabon, chair of the Community Center committee, reported at the Fair Bluff Rotary Club on January 28 that three lots on Tabor City road were bought for the building at two dollars with a remaining balance in the fund. The committee will tour other centers for ideas and report back with plans. A Bethel Community Development Club meeting is set for Wednesday at 7 30. Atlanta Lingerie Co signed a formal lease with Planter's Warehouse owners for 9 000 square feet to begin industrial training operations, targeting February 1 for pilot training and February 28 to start full operations, pending equipment arrival. Clayton Lewis will host a Williams Township School PTA program with a film on preparing children and a glee club performance.
The Tabor City High School chorus directed by Mrs. W. W. Woody and assisted by Wis Forman Fowler will perform five selections including Ave Verum Corpus and Certainly Lord at Williams Township School for the Columbus County unit of the North Carolina Education Association meeting on Tuesday afternoon. The group has prepared for the State Rating Contest in Wilmington and begun work on its spring musical show.
