The senior class at Williams School under Eugene Ser’s direction has begun daily rehearsals for a mas adaptation of Ed tons-immense tale of backwoods life. Jerson plays Ralph Hartsook with Mil t Andrews as Hannah Thom a, while Margaret Ickland portrays Means. The entire class forms a large cast as they prepare for a mid fall presentation.
Thompson Greenwood of Raleigh is named executive secretary of the North Carolina Merchants Association, succeeding Dowell. Greenwood, since June 187, has acted as assistant secretary and will begin his duties in May. The board aims to raise 200000 for a UNC chair of retailing to train future merchants and assist local campaigns statewide.
Coker College in Hartsville plans an 8 oclock basketball game on February 4 against an independent Darlington group, raising funds for the March of Dimes. Darlington student James M. Patterson organizes the visitors. Nina Cox leads Coker student activities. The event marks Coker mens teams first campus clash since its 1908 transition from a womens college.
Clifton's Fish and Seafood announces the store is now open on Fourth Street after moving from Fifth Street. The notice notes the business relocation.
Buck I King of the AAA office in Conway will be guest speaker before the Greer Sea Young Farmers Association at its regular meeting Monday night February 6 at 6 30 in the High School auditorium. King will explain the 1939 farm program and tobacco quota rules. All farmers in the high school district are invited.
Clarendon College students resume classes after the holidays. Notable returning students include Betty Jo Stevens W C UNC Greensboro L P Ward Malcolm Stevens J W Wray Bernard Frink and others from High Point College.
Mount Tabor Baptist Church voted to boycott Whiteville after the town approved selling beer and wine. The fifth Sunday congregational meeting approved the boycott with no opposition voiced.
Marion County sheriff Leon Gasque said J L Caulder will be arrested on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. Caulder allegedly borrowed $65 from Inman Cox and Gore Funeral Home to cover costs of his mother in law’s illness and death. He admitted the hoax last week and promised to repay but has failed to do so. Previously Caulder served a penal sentence for the same offense in Marion County.
Mount Tabor Baptist Church will start two projects in early spring. Project one enlarges the Sunday school department and project two will enlarge the auditorium, announced E. W. Fonvielle, finance committee chairman.
A. E. Goldfinch, president of the Tabor City Merchants Association, announced that the February board of directors meeting would be held on Friday night, February 10. Time and place to be announced later. All members and prospective members are invited, and a suitable meeting place will be arranged to accommodate attendees. He urged a large turnout for the year 1950 program.
Clarendon barber Fred Simmons has accepted a position at Stevens Barber Shop. Owner D A Stevens announced the hire this week. Simmons brings several years of experience and recently came from a Whiteville shop and now resides in Clarendon.
Theatre group rehearses for Night Must Fall first major production with under three weeks left. Cast includes James Cox, Frances Sarvn, Julia Graham, and Caroline Jackson. Postmaster Garrell announces new truck routes replacing mail messenger service effective Feb 1 with faster dispatch, including Chadbourn to Conway and Tabor City to Loris routes.
Ralph J. Hewlett announces 42 conventions booked for 1950 at the Ocean Forest Hotel in Myrtle Beach with tentative reservations. The season opened January 22 with about 600 delegates from six states for the Raritan National Convention held January 22 to 24.
County officials announced the March of Dimes campaign fell short of the 13000 goal and will be extended two more weeks. Eldred Hickman reported Tabor City raised 1000 of 2000, with local school funds and individuals contributing. prizes were awarded at a dance in Whiteville to Woodrow Duncan and Mitchell Wray.
Veterans Commissioner H. G. Berry spoke to the Tabor City American Legion Post about the Veterans program. Commander C. H. Pinner oversaw reports as the group voted to start a $10 jackpot for the next meeting with S. P. Smith of Carolina Department Store making the first contribution. Ted Soles was named chairman of a committee to coordinate hut renovations with the Masonic Order. The next meeting is set for February 23.
A benefit Valentine Carnival will be held at the American Legion Hut on Saturday night February 11 at 7 30 sponsored by the junior class of the local high school. The Valentine King and Queen will be crowned during the evening and the public is invited to attend.
The Carlton M. Fonvielle Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a Ladies Night Banquet at the City Cafe Friday at 7 30 p m Commander LeRoy Gore announced. Several special guests have been invited to attend.
Ethel Hanley announces a Marinette show at Tabor City school auditorium Friday at 1 o clock. C H Pinner principal says all school children admitted with a small door fee.
The Men’s Choral Club of Mullins will present a program at the Green Sea High School auditorium Thursday evening February 3 at 8 o’clock under the sponsorship of the Youth Round Table. The public is invited with no admission at the door, but a silver offering will be expected.
Members of the Tabor City Lions Club and their guests will gather Tuesday evening February 7 at the American Legion Hut for Charter Night Banquet under the Whiteville Club sponsorship. Speakers include Dr L Todd Whiteville club president J E Bell Tabor City club president and Wallace Dickens district governor. The Tabor City Woman's Club will provide the banquet dinner.
Whiteville and Fair Bluff fell behind as Clinton edged them in a 40 to 33 Friday on Whiteville court. Star players include Stevlon Stevens with 11 and Bill White with 10 for the Red Devils, while Gene Ezzell led Whiteville with 12.
