A tabloid recounts how a two way radio aided a county sheriff and officers inside 24 hours for a payout of dividends. Ted Watts used the radio to raise the alarm during a fatal hit and run in Whiteville. Officials noted the radio service costs about 30 dollars monthly but improved contact and may have prevented another attack.

Tabor City Farmer Killed by Hit and Run Driver

Z W Shell Williams a 63 year old farmer of Tabor City died after being struck by a pulpwood truck on Green Sea road Saturday night. Clyde Daniels the 20 year old colored driver did not stop and was arrested minutes later. Inquest set for tonight and funeral services held at Inman Cox and Gore Funeral Home with burial in Forest Lawn cemetery. He is survived by his wife seven daughters two sons and a brother.

Veterans Farm Training program application deadline set

L. Jackson of the Veterans Farm Training Program announces that eligible local veterans wishing to train next year must have a farming situation by January 1, 1951 and file an application before June 30, 1951. Interested persons should contact him at the Agriculture Building Tabor City schools.

Florida fishing nets local men Hugh catch near Deland

A. Worth Hardee and H. C. Cox of Tabor City fished in St Johns River near Deland Florida Tuesday and Wednesday, returning Saturday with 50 speckled perch weighing over 50 pounds. They fished with minnows, stayed a week but filled two days with rapid bites and praised Mr. Olivers place as a fine, inexpensive fishing spot. They also met Grover Jacobs, formerly of Tabor City, now resident in Deland.

Tabor City Glee Club Presents Christmas Cantata

The Tabor City High School Glee Club, directed by Mrs W W Woody, will present Christmas Cantata at the Baptist Church Sunday night at 7 30. The 65 member ensemble has highlighted the town Christmas activities in recent years with Mrs Furman Fowler as organist and Margaret Jo Jernigan as pianist. No Methodist church services will be held Sunday night to allow all to enjoy the cantata.

Fidelis Class Christmas Party At Mount Tabor

The Fidelis Class of Mount Tabor Baptist Sunday School held its annual Christmas party at Mrs. LaDosca S. Fecher’s home. Miss Kate Jones spoke on The Other Wise Man, with Mrs. Jack Miller presiding. Attendance honors went to Mrs. Don Jernigan’s group. losses to Deland Leonard, Aubrey James, and Ollie Clemons. Gifts and a social period followed, with a basket for a needy family and canned goods.

Brown urges strong defense to avert world wars during VFW talk

Otis N Brown executive director of the Veterans of Foreign Wars warned a full house that a powerful peacetime military could avert another world war. He urged united veteran action to press Congress, noted 8 million of 18 million veterans belong to groups, and recalled talks with FDR. He predicted a near certainty of World War II and urged readiness despite tax costs.

Civics Class Presents Program at Tabor City High

Tabor City high school civics class presented a program on liberty peace and prosperity with a narration and sound effects. Rev G W Crutchfield offered a Christmas prayer and a student made United Nations flag was presented to Principal C H Pinner. The class traced colonial freedom democracy the League of Nations and the United Nations. Mrs W J Hickman visited Mullins and stayed with her daughter Mrs James Jayroe. Welfare chair Mrs Wright asked club to leave packages at Wrights Gas or deliver baskets to Mrs Willard Wright for Christmas Eve.

Navy Ensign Dies In Wreck Near Gore’s Lake

Navy ensign Frank Richard Perkey 26, of Fleet Post Office New York, killed when his Chrysler New Yorker struck a bridge on the Whiteville highway near Gore’s Lake. He had left Charleston and was en route to Norfolk. believed to be a Roanoke sailor and Naval Academy 1948 alumnus. Patrolman W S Allen investigated. timing around 4:20 Tuesday morning with the car wrecked and Perkey pinned to the dashboard.
