Best Civitan Minstrel Yet Slated Here Friday Night

The Best Civitan Minstrel of the year is planned for Friday at 8:00 p.m. in the gymnasium auditorium here. Local acts include a senate orvershop quartet and solo numbers, with several named performers and a community troupe contributing to the program.

Songfest Sunday Brings Together Young Musicians

Four hundred trained voices from ten glee clubs and the 100 piece Columbus County Schools band perform sacred and classical works on Sunday May 4 at Williams Township High School. The event opens at 2 30 P M with county superintendent T Ward Guy welcoming the audience.

Manless Wedding Planned by HD Club at Whiteville School

Tabor Homemakers announce a Manless Wedding program at the Whiteville school auditorium. Officials of the club will speak at the event. A quilt will be given to the timber holder during the program. Public is invited with no admission charge.

Special Army Jobs Open To High School Grads

Food G Youmans county ref eling sergeant announced that quotas may enlist for 3 and receive 18 weeks of training. After completion they choose from 30 schools for 2 to 18 week courses. Graduates may also apply at Candidate School. Youmans visits Tabor Post Office Wednesdays 10 to 11 a.m. at headquarters in Whiteville.

New Life Club Holds Meeting and Dress Review

The New Life Home Demonstration club met at Mrs. A. D. Fipps home with Mrs. Alton Fipps. A dress review awarded first to Mrs. Vernon Morris, second to Mrs. Ralph Jol ly, and third to Mrs. Norman Stephens. Nutrition leader Mrs. Douglas Mills spoke on Better Meals For Your Money and Miss Grady Patterson discussed clothing.

Dr Randall Speaks at Rotary on WWII Army Intelligence

Dr William Randall dean of Wilmington Junior College spoke to the local Rotary Club at Mrs Todd's Monday night recounting service with Army intelligence in Egypt during World War II Publicity director John Sikes attended and introduced him. Mr and Mrs Eugene Grainger and Mr and Mrs Levi Grainger spent the weekend in Washington DC on a sightseeing trip.

FFA Boys Take Second in Livestock Judging Contest

Tabor City FFA teams finished second in Chadbourn livestock judging with Whiteville first in beef heifers and dairy cows. Bolivia FFA won dairy and heifers, Bladenboro second. four teams advance to Elizabethtown on May 10. Tabor City members include Wright Ward Gore Cartrette Ward Jackson and Johnson coached by local ag teachers.

Woman's Club Scrapbook Wins Ribbon at State Contest

The Tabor City Woman's Club scrapbook won third place at the state convention in Winston Salem last week, earning a ribbon. Mrs. G. W. Crutchfield chaired the scrapbook. Miss Helen Butler, Miss Maude Butler, and Miss Anne Brooks McGougan attended the Delta Kappa Gamma State Convention in Pinehurst on Saturday.

Trial adjourned in Klan flogging case linger

A Columbus County judge paused a special one week term to hear a defense motion to quash indictments against 13 of 27 alleged Ku Klux Klansmen. The delay, tied to a disputed 1949 rotating grand jury law, may delay all four flogging cases slated for the week.

Pireway Bridge Opening Brings Regional Leaders and Celebrations

A large crowd gathered Thursday for the formal opening of the Pireway Bridge spanning the Waccamaw River linking Brunswick and Columbus counties. State and local officials praised the structure for cutting travel time, while bands from Shalotte High and Columbus County played. Tabor City merchants distributed about $1,000 in trade certificates, and speeches by Mayor Al Williams and state officials highlighted expected regional benefits and long term utility. A preceeding fresh water fish dinner in Tabor City welcomed highway officials and dignitaries from Brunswick and Columbus counties.

Peggy Carter Wins Contest and PTA Elects New Officers

Peggy Carter won first place in the World Peace Essay Speaking contest at the Tabor City Woman's Club PTA meeting. Mary Jo Pinner received honorable mention. The club will enter the winning paper in the 1952 53 North Carolina contest for a possible 1953 federation award. Mrs. R P Counts was re elected president with Ralph Inman as vice president Kate Jones secretary and F C Norris Jr treasurer. Attendance trophies were awarded to Mrs Smiths third grade and Miss Britts seventh grade. Door prizes went to Mrs F C Norris Jr and S L Jackson.

Merchants Association to Close Wednesdays in Summer

The Tabor City Merchants Association will close all member stores at 1:00 PM each Wednesday starting next week. President Oliver Prince announced the plan, with closures continuing through August per a long standing resolution.

Leinwand's Reopens Here Saturday

Leinwand's store will reopen Saturday morning at its new Railroad Street location next to City Cafe. The building formerly housed Meares and has been renovated with modernized equipment. Mr. and Mrs. Hyman Leinwand started in May 1947 and this week opened their Emporia Virginia second store. Mrs. Odessa Pucket becomes manager, former Odessa Watts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Watts.

April Party Honors Mrs. Alton Stanley

Mrs. Alton Stanley was honored with a stork shower at the home of Mrs. Clinton Wright this month. Hostesses served a sweet course after gifts were opened by the honoree. The guest list features numerous local women including Mrs. James Puckett, Mrs. Lester Watts, and Mrs. Paul Stephens.

Canvass Underway For Cancer Fund

Canvass for funds for the American Cancer Society drive in Tabor City is under way led by local officials and the Woman's Club volunteers. Tabor City aims to raise 800 of the county's 2200 goal with the Cancer Home in Lumberton adding urgency. Rainbow Girls plan Tag Day in the business district to educate and solicit funds.
