A report outlines a planned junior baseball team in the Tabor area this year. Elbert Shel and Shay lead efforts with prospects from 182 or later, aiming to organize a free campaign and form the team.
The Columbus County band and solo artists performed in a musical revue at Tabor City High School Auditorium last Friday to raise funds for new uniforms, part of a series planned by Director Bob Hodges to support the band members.
Columbus County farmers organized a County Cotton Growers Association to secure government loans on stored cotton and for bonded warehouse loans. Members will have bale sampling and government grading, with blanks available at the county agent and AAA offices. April 30 signups coordinated by local PMA and committee members.
Mazie Carroll reports that FDSA Strickland is in hospital following surgery. Colleagues and family, including Mrs. Grainger of Rock, Pvt. Turbeville, and Mr. Turbeville, visit in Columbus County as Mes BT and Fort Jackson ties are noted with health updates.
Miss Lupo, an assistant case worker in the Columbus Welfare department, has been named acting superintendent under former head Mrs Johnsie Nunn. The temporary appointment lasts 30 days and covers duties of the welfare department. Miss Lupo is a native of the Green Sea section.
John P Cribb died Saturday at the home of Mrs. Dollie Cribb after a long illness. Funeral was Monday at 3 PM from Welcome Free Will Baptist Church with Rev Willie B. Lewis and Rev Jesse Hilburn officiating. Burial in Cribb cemetery. Surviving are one brother Rev Z C Cribb of Clarendon Rt 1, one sister Mrs Lydia Carter of Chadbourn Rt 1, six nephews and five nieces.
Mrs. Howard Hinson and Mrs. Henry Shelley hosted guests from Whiteville and local towns. Norfolk visitors John P. Derham and family spent the weekend with relatives. Essie Derham honored Sadie Clark and poet Lemmon in Myrtle Beach and Charleston. W. M. S. meeting set for May 4 at 2 30 with all members urged to attend. Duke Hospital updates on John Clemons Sr. and Eastern Divisional W. M. S. in Lake City noted. Visitors include Oscar Putnam from Greenville and Mullins Hospital acknowledgments. Easter visits feature Mrs. Reams of Asheville and others.
Mrs. Liston Hinson returns home from James Walker Hospital Wilmington after multiple operations. Local notes include Tom Nealy taking over R F D delivery for Greensboro Daily News and a Sunday prayer meeting with Franklin Cribb. Community updates report tobacco planting, strawberry prices, farm costs, and several visits and moves among Emerson residents.
Local residents share visits and social gatherings across Dulah, Whiteville, Tabor City, Nakina, and nearby areas. Multiple families including Longs and Harpers are noted visiting kin, with several trips to Columbia and Fayetteville and a hospital update on Clarence Seagle.
TABOR VISITOR Mrs V A Marlowe of Whiteville stayed with her daughter Mrs LaRue Cox. Several relatives including Misses Kate Jones Caroline Murray Myrtle Bailey and Mrs Albert Sasser of Hallsboro visited. Mr and Mrs Horace Cox returned from a week long wedding trip to Boone Tenn and will reside in the W W Woody apartment. Mrs R G Davis left for Richmond to be with her daughter Virginia Davis who had an operation at Pine Camp Hospital earlier in the week.
Mrs Lester Long reports a weekend of family gatherings and visits. Wil mington guests include Mr and Mrs I T Long and Mr and Mrs R J Stocks. Eva Suggs and Georg a Puckett are noted among relatives visiting, with multiple Longs and Suggs spending time with parents and grandparents.
The Ritz Theatre announces passes for the Best Citizen in each class and for top attendance. This week Miss Roberta McCulloch’s first grade received a monthly attendance award. Best Citizen recipients include Michael Fipps Doris Soles Judy Noris Jeanne Dave Jordan in first grade and many others through twelfth grade including Janet Jernigan Betty Willoughby Eva Lee Strickland Mildred Ward Vera Ward Dalton Ward Adazena Gore and Mary Williamson.
Highway Patrolman W. S. Allen will operate from Tabor City town hall on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until 10 a.m. for inspecting used cars entering the state for local registration. The plan follows a legislative act mandating complete mechanical inspections of second hand cars before North Carolina registration. Allen stated the inspections will ensure vehicles are in top condition before approval.
The Columbus County Health Department announced the appointment of David O Thompson of Lake Waccamaw to supervise the DDT spraying program this year. The campaign will be similar to the past two years and available for residents who wish to participate, with Thompson or the Health Department handling inquiries.
Mrs. LaRue Cox was announced the 335 jackpot winner at the New Tabor Theatre on Wednesday night but did not claim the prize. She was serving at her job in the Rite Theatre box office.
The Tabor City Woman's Club sponsors the Columbus County Library unit at the club house with reading hours on Tuesday and Friday afternoons from 2:30 to 5:00 starting May 3. Clubwomen will assist patrons. The club will also start a community library and accepts book donations or loans on Tuesdays or Fridays for noon pickup.
The Jessup-Inman funeral home faces a third auction at noon May 7 after a consent judgment of partnership dissolution. H M Clark of Elizabethtown bid before, with C W Cox and G T Gore bidding in the 10 day waiting period. The sale follows an altercation in which Jessup was shot allegedly by Inman, who faced assault charges. The bidders are rumored to represent each partner, with Clark bidding for Jessup and Cox and Gore for Inman. The sale proceeds under the judgment allowing either partner to bid.

B Gordon Lewis 44 editor and publisher of the Columbus County News at Chadbourn died suddenly of a heart attack at his Whiteville home. A Wakeville native, he edited the News-Reporter for years and bought the Chadbourn paper five years ago. He recently completed memoirs Twenty Years of Newspapering in Columbus County. Survived by his wife Frances Bruce and three children, funeral held at McKenzie Funeral Home. Other notes mention church, club memberships, and local guests attending events.
The Home Demonstration club at Brunswick County attended the 18th district federation meeting on April 7. Members present were Mrs. Elbert Wright, Mrs. J. A. Jernigan, Mrs. J. D. Harrelson, Mrs Whit Wright and Mrs. U. T. Mincey.
Mr and Mrs Willie Hewett and son Gene visited Mr and Mrs Mitchell Gore at Bug Hill Sunday. Numerous families from Tron Hill area hosted and visited relatives and friends during the Easter weekend, with several groups returning to Winston-Salem Monday.
Tabor City's cancer campaign trails its $400 target as drive chairmen Mrs. S. T. Rogers and Mrs. Mae Young urge donations. County chairman Dr. Erelyn Leonard asks community chairmen to report to County Treasurer Miss Miriam Gurrell by May 7. The Tabor tiny Woman's club sponsors the drive with educational chairwoman Mrs. Willard Wright. Dr. Ross M. Williamson leads the executive committee. Miss Helen Butler Miss Ann Books McGougan Miss Manteen Winstead and Miss Margaret Jo Jeenigan attended a Delta Kappa Gamma dinner in Wilmington Saturday, with Miss Winstead and Miss Jeenigan on the program. Miss Butler served on the program committee. TO FAYETTEVILLE: The R. R. Rogers family visited Fayetteville Sunday.
