New Sewing Plant To Begin Pilot Operation Here Soon

Governor Terry Sanford announced Sport s Corporation of America will locate a new sewing plant in Tabor City with a pilot operation in a 10 000 square foot space. The project, aided by the Merchants Association, plans about 40 machines and eventual 40 000 square feet of industrial space. Atlanta Lingerie and Sportee Corpora tion of America were secured after months of effort. The plan includes potential job offers for local workers and notes the firms may relocate if labor supply is inadequate.

Tornado Winds Strike Columbus County Causing Injuries and Damage

An estimated 80 mile per hour tornado swept central and western Columbus County on Tuesday afternoon injuring one man and damaging homes farms and businesses. Rossie Ward 24 of Whiteville was treated for trailer injuries while his wife Wilma escaped unharmed. The Evergreen-Chadbourn area suffered the worst damage with uprooted trees debris and a roof loss at several structures including Wooten Motors and Sessions Farm Machinery. A tobacco barn near Evergreen was demolished and power lines were severed for hours. Crops mostly escaped damage per county agent Charles D per.

UNC Coach Jim Hickey to Speak at Tabor City Banquet

University of North Carolina football coach Jim Hickey will address Tabor City High School's Athletic Banquet on May 6 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Special trophies recognize top tolball, basketball, baseball and track participants, with stars and letters for players and cheerleaders. Vito Ragazzo, UNC assistant coach, will also attend along with Civitan and Rotary Club Ladies' Night events.

Shriners Sponsor Minstrel and Variety Show in Whiteville

The Columbus County Shrine Club will sponsor a Minstrel and Variety Show on Saturday April 27 at 8 p m in Whiteville High School auditorium. The cast includes 44 members from Raleigh State Prison. Proceeds benefit the Crippled Children's Hospital. Tickets are available from local Shriner organizers including Ralph Inman and Claude Boyd.

Civitans Hold Zone Meeting Here Monday

Civitans from six southeastern North Carolina towns met in a school cafeteria for an annual zone gathering. NC Civitan Governor Elect Charlie Sessoms led officials including Col Zebe Hopkins and Joe Hipp with representatives from Lumberton Whiteville Chadbourn Fayetteville and Tabor City. Wilmington sent no delegates.

Shooting Victim Critical After Weekend Shooting

A Chadbourn youth, Bobby Hilburn, 19, remained in critical condition at James Walker Hospital Wilmington after a gunshot to the head near Mitchell's Service Station in the Five-Point area of Hallsboro. Keith Lawson, 29, operator of the Patio Drive-In, is held in Columbus County Jail pending further investigation as the suspected shooter after an argument over girls and speed of cars.

Martha Wright Earns State FHA Degree at Raleigh Ceremony

Martha Wright, a junior at Tabor City High School, received the State Homemaking Degree Saturday in Raleigh at the Coliseum. About 212 other girls from Williams Township School and other districts earned the same award as part of the Future Homemakers of America enrollment.

Miss Columbus County Beauty Pageant Faces Low Entries

The Tabor City Junior Chamber of Commerce urged more entrants for the Miss Columbus County contest to avoid cancellation. Only two entries confirmed for the May 10 pageant with an April 25 deadline. organizers seek at least six more. Miss Nancy Carolyn Horne and Miss Angelia Diana Powell have filed, each with ties to local families and schools. Powell studies at Mule Business College. Local Libraries Mark National Library Week At Tabor City Schools

Libaries at Tabor City School System celebrate National Library Week by circulating about 1000 books weekly. High school librarian Louise G. Murray notes 2846 volumes with 219 purchased this year and aims for over 3000 to meet state standards, while elementary librarian Pat Collier reports around 5600 volumes. Funds from state and student fees support both libraries, with National Defense Education Act money aiding new books and supplies. The libraries receive 25 magazines and three daily newspapers plus local county papers free of charge.
