Red Cross Seeks Disaster Funds For Flood Relief

Judge Clawson L Williams of Sanford will preside over a special term beginning April 28 and a regular term starting May 5 to hear 25 alleged Ku Klux Klan related violence cases in Columbus County. Winthrop to Host South Carolina Senior Girls

Winthrop College in Rock Hill will entertain senior girls from South Carolina high schools on April 26 and 27. Dean of Women Mrs. Iona B. Berry and Winthrop freshmen plan an informal program with campus tours assembly and picnic at the Winthrop Shack plus dormitory parties and movies.

Eastern Star Chapter Marks Seventh Birthday Anniversary

The local Eastern Star chapter observed its seventh birthday with a program at the Masonic hall. Mrs. Emma W. Smith presided as Worthy Matron. The candlelight moment featured seven candles lit by Mrs. Mae S. Young and Mrs. Myrtle Soles. Vera Fonvielle read the chapter history and Letha Gore delivered a poem titled Firm Foundation. Refreshments followed served by several members.

Local Chorus Heads to State Festival in Greensboro

Eleven members of Tabor City High School Chorus will attend the State Festival Chorus in Greensboro on Thursday and Friday under Lara Hogard of Fred Waring Penn. They join Chorus One for Friday night concerts. participants include Jimmy Rogers Dick Garrell Harold Jordan and others with Mrs. W. W. Woody and Mrs. Nell R. Fowler accompanying.

Two More Suspects Arrested in Columbus County Floggings

State Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Rex Connor and Lawrence Nivens in Whiteville in connection with the Dec 8 1951 flogging of Woodrow Johnson. The arrests bring total charged in the Klan flogging cases to 27 as a special Superior Court term opens with 25 indicted defendants.

Umstead Opposes World War II Veterans Bonus Referendum

William B. Umstead, gubernatorial candidate and World War I veteran, opposes a pending referendum on a World War II veterans bonus. He argues funding would total about 200 million dollars at a time when schools hospitals and roads need funds. He notes two earlier bills proposing a bonus were defeated after a veterans march on the Capitol.

The 79 voice chorus directed by Mrs. W. W. Woody with accompanist Mrs. Nell R. Fowler will perform in the school auditorium at 8 p.m. on Tuesday May 13, following a delay from the originally planned May 2 date.
