The Ullins Antique show announces its opening on April 25th with over 10 exhibits. Featured items include petticoats and sewn works, highlighting old textiles and domestic crafts. Frances Lips and Mrs Thompson oversee displays with local exhibitors including waitstaff contributions.
Earl Harrelson of Mullins died at his home Tuesday morning. Born in Green Sea, he was the son of Luther Harrelson and the late M Harrelson. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 3 pm at Green Sea Baptist Church with interment in Green Sea Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Elsie Walliamson Harrelson, a daughter, a son, two brothers and two sisters.
The Red Devils beat Whiteville 4 2 in a nine inning game as Jordan and Collier led the pitchers. Marion Gore and Thompson started for the Devils while Horton and Thompson combined for the opposition.
Miss Pensalee Powell daughter of Mr and Mrs John J Powell of Loris South Carolina and Vernon Harrelson son of Mrs Emma Harrelson and the late Durance Harrelson of Loris were married on Sunday April 16 in Conway South Carolina. The bride wore a navy blue and navy and white accessories. Mrs Harrelson is a Green Sea High School and Draughon's Business College graduate. Mr Harrelson attended Green Sea High School and is a World War II veteran with 32 months in the European theatre. He now farms.
In Tabor City a 30 year old man named Willie James Bognight was shot and killed around 8 45 PM in the mill district. The weapon was a 12 gauge shotgun reportedly fired by J W Worthen after an argument over whiskey led to a fight with Marion Billinger. Billinger fled but Worthen allegedly retrieved the gun and it discharged fatally hitting Bognight who had just arrived on the scene. Coroner H Hugh Nance announced an inquest next week and Worthen is jailed awaiting possible charges. A coroner's jury was summoned Sunday night by Police Chief L K Watson.
Mount Tabor Baptist Church announces Church Loyalty Week from April 24 to 28 under Training Union sponsorship led by Rev. P. C. Gantt. Evening programs run 7 to 9 with two study periods nightly and a feature session from 7:45 to 8:15, encouraging full attendance across church departments.
A revival meeting named for Sunday April 28 at the Fire Baptized Holiness Church in Tabor will feature guest minister Callins of St Pauls with special music and singing plans indicated.
The Junior Class hosted the Senior Class banquet on Friday April 14 at Harry's Anchor Fare Lake Waccamaw with Frances Sarvis as toastmaster and Senior Class president giving the response. A program featured Monteen Winstead singing Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year Leckman Milligan spoke Rain Magic Nellie Mary Williamson read Looking For The Lost and When It Rains It Pours. The hall was decked with umbrellas pines and related decor as about 150 seniors juniors staff and guests attended then danced to the Columbus County Band.
Construction is underway on a two story annex to Mrs Mary Todd's boarding house to house fifty six grade students. The plan includes more than eight rooms with private baths and a connected planatarium at Chapel Hill. Bobby Collins and the faculty accompany the group for a Thursday visit.
Pete Ray 69 a Sandy Plains farmer died unexpectedly at his home early Monday. Funeral services were at Sandy Plains Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon with Rev Cyde Prince officiating. Burial followed in churchyard. He was survived by five brothers Charlie Jessie Ray of Tabor City John Ray of Calabash Randell Ray of Gestonia and others. Sisters include Mrs Mac Williams of Nakina Martha Pelee of Taecte Mocwin Ward of Wik Minnie Stanley Minton and Loris.
The May 27 Democratic primary field in Columbus County solidified as filing closed. Notable matches include Jack Hayes challenging Lee J. Green for Clerk of Superior Court and Sam L. Fuller vs Bill Floyd for District 5 Commissioner. Nine candidates entered the coroner race, including D. A. Stevens and James Lee Joyner, with a crowded slate across sheriff, state and local seats.
A gubernatorial style race heats up as candidates plan a county rally near Raleigh. Key speakers include party leaders and the event aims to mobilize supporters ahead of the primary with a night gathering at a local venue.
