In Beaufort, Rev. Winfrey Davis, a Baptist pastor, has been confined at home after suffering a stroke. The incident, reported by NAKINA NEWS, notes his age and ongoing care as of late Friday.
A flurry of visits across Whiteville and nearby areas includes D. P. Ward and others traveling to Whiteville. Norman Long and children visiting Mrs. Hobbs. H L McLambs at Addie Ward. Coleen Walker staying with Aunt Ernest Wilson. and multiple Sunday calls among Spiveys, Harpers, Bentons, Wilsons, and others.
Postal receipts at the Tabor City post office for the first quarter of 1948 totaled 3203.69 dollars. Acting postmaster Mrs. Leona G. Brown reported the figures.
Mayor Al Williams and Councilmen Horace Roberts Dewey Stevens and Robert Soles visited Magnolia on Tuesday afternoon to view a four in one combination motor grader and street sweeper the town is considering purchasing.

The Tubay City Merchants Association approved sending questionnaires to members to gauge support for half day closings on Wednesdays Wixinesekeys. A tentative start date of May 1 was set for the summer half holidays.
Berry sales remain light but quality is high as strawberries reach markets. About 50 crates sold Tuesday in Tabor City at Clayton Spivey’s place near the railroad and Fifth Street with prices from 9 to 12 dollars.
Cerro Gordo Principal McLamb elected president of the Columbus County School Principals association at a Tuesday night meeting hosted by Principal C. H. Pinner of Tabor City. J. A. Workman of Acme-Delco named vice president and Isley of Kiteville named secretary-treasurer. A state wide school survey planned for the week of April 26 was discussed.
Five Columbus County candidates filed for nomination this week. W. F. Floyd of Whiteville seeks reelection to the county board of commissioners. Arthur W. Williamson of Cerro Gordy seeks reelection to the same board. Alex Weir of Lake Waccamaw seeks reelection to the county commission. Homer G. Avant seeks reelection to the state legislature. Mrs. Carrie Butler Baggett seeks the legislature on the Republican ticket after being nominated at the county convention earlier this month.
A. A. White of Tabor City, former Bladenboro Rotary president, presented Livingston A. Bridger the T Trophy as the year’s most outstanding Rotarian. White noted Bridger’s civic service to Bladenboro, Bladen County, and the state.
Miss Ruth Elvington of Fair Bluff spent the weekend with her uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Wallace Soles, here for a short visit.
Turbeville worked 6 2 3 innings of no hit ball as Tabor City High beat Fair Bluff 6 to 3. Fipps closed the game with strikeouts after a seventh inning rally, while Earl Stanley and Ted Fipps led TC’s hitting attack. Cal Davis pitched well for Fair Bluff, but costly errors doomed his team.
The Ritz Theatre has added modern multi colored lights on the side walls inside the auditorium. Manager Joe Anderson says the latest lighting will create a cheerful atmosphere with rainbow hues.
Tabor City High baseball loses 7 to 4 at Whiteville in the District 2 Class A series opener. Whiteville capitalized on fourth inning errors to erase a 3 0 TC lead, scoring six runs and adding one in the ninth. Soles pitched well despite nine hits and eight strikeouts, with Williams earning the win. Ted Fipps and Orbin Fowler led TC hitting, while Inman and Anderson paced Whiteville.
Eleventh graders toured Charleston historical sites and gardens as the climax of South Carolina history study guided by Mrs Lupo Strickland and Miss Lewis. May Day is set for Tuesday May 4 at 5 pm with Irene Gerrald crowned queen and Mil dred Cartrette maid of honor. The court was elected by popular vote and glee club. folk dances. costumes by Mrs Hall. pageant written by the supervising deputy.
Carolyn Morgan of Fair Bluff receives interclass basketball honors at Coker College. She served as class team captain in 1947 and earned a place on the honor squad in 1946, continuing to be recognized for her athletic achievements.
St. Louis salesman John Mackey rushed to a gasoline station fire after a car skidded on ice and struck a gas pump, tipping it and triggering flames. He used a sample extinguisher to quell the blaze before the fire department arrived, but Tony Reiss the operator refused to buy, saying the fire was out.
Davis Fowler 62 of Loris route one died suddenly at his home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o clock after a heart attack. Funeral services were to be held Thursday at 3 from the home with burial in Collins cemetery. Surviving are two sons Rob ert and Melvin both of St Pauls, three daughters Mrs Sally Hewitt of Dulah Mrs Thel ma Beck of St Pauls and Mrs Mary Jernigan of Loris route one, four brothers Pearlie Charlie and Jilie of Tabor City and Dexter of Conway, one sister Mrs Seymour Fowler of Tabor City.
Funeral services were held for Bill Johnson 50 of route two Tabor City. The Rev D P Wipperman officiated at Carolina Baptist church with burial in Carolina cemetery. Johnson died Friday night en route to Conway hospital after a heart attack at his brother’s home. He was a Conway native living with Carons Grainger of route two. Surviving are his wife Thelma Ward a daughter Agnes and brothers Elijah and Odel both of Conway S C.
Lee Rubber and Tire Co announces a 15 percent price cut on its Lee deluxe five rib tire for size 600x16 from $15.25 to $12.95 plus tax. Prince Oil Co. local agent says policy fights inflation while preserving quality. Other sizes reduced accordingly under President A A Garthwaite quotation.
Two men from the Tabor City area joined the United States Army last week. Robert Prince was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and Buck Bozeman joined as Regular Army.
