County Horse Club Organizes Mond ay In Cerro Gordo

Some 25 horsemen from across the county gathered in Cerro Gordo Monday night to organize the Columbus County Horse Club and plan the future of the Columbus Coin Arena. Eloy Mercer of Chadbourn was elected president, L C Greene secretary treasurer. Directors named were Clyde Marley, Junior Stewart, and Kenneth Coleman. Rodeos at the Cerro Gordo arenas will be free to the public with events like bulls, bulldogging, and horse races planned for upcoming Saturday nights.

Man Dies In Auto Tractor Crash On Hwy 701

An auto tractor collision on highway 701 between Loris and Tabor City at dusk killed 62 year old Raymond Condary Fowler. The car occupants, including Roger Elliott and Eddie Gore, suffered minor injuries and were hospitalized. Funeral services were held at Inman Funeral Home with burial at Twin City Memorial Gardens. He is survived by his wife Minnie Fowler, a son Dennis Fowler, three sisters, two daughters, two brothers, and ten grandchildren.

Auto Overturns Leave One Dead Three Hurt Near Loris

A negro man died and three others were injured when a car overturned at the intersection of Flagpatch Road and Hwy 9 east of Loris. Ethel Bell Williams died, while Arthur Gore, James Williams and Thelma Scippio were hospitalized at Loris Community Hospital. Gore was driver. the crash occurred in dense smoke from a forest fire raging earlier Saturday.

Watts Joins CP and L as Florence Material Man

Oscar L. Watts Jr has been employed by Carolina Power and Light as a material man in Florence within the operating and engineering department. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Oscar L Watts of Tabor City and attended Green Sea High School. He previously worked at Chadbourn Textiles and Gard ner Appliances.

Indications Show Yam Acres Down Across Major States

USDA figures released show 210 100 acres of sweet potatoes to be planted in 1963, five percent below 1962 and 18 percent below the 1957-61 average. Major producers from New Jersey to California indicate smaller plantings, with North Carolina projecting 23 000 acres, 16 percent under 1962. If realized, 1963 production would be the second smallest on record and about 22 percent below the five year average.

A Ta bor City Marketing Com pany spokesman said buyers will seek all varieties of sweet potatoes this year not limited to Kandee but Nugget and Centinnel if properly shaped and quality. Reports note seed potatoes rotted amid a seed shortage. Norris Heid of Tabor City Foods offered to help brewers locate seed potatoes. Egg Beef Producers Referendum Set

Egg and cattle voting drives in North Carolina set for April 6 at University events and local polling sites. Producers of eggs dairy cattle and beef cattle qualify to vote on continuing self help product promotion programs funded by per head assessments. Baptists Schedule Evening Prayer Meetings for Revival

Tabor City Baptist Church plans a week long series of prayer meetings beginning Monday April B through April 12 led by Rev. Daniel HO Dolnisen and a roster of ministers and lay leaders including Mrs Bow, Mrs Cecil Harrelson, Mered M McGuingan, and many others, in preparation for an upcoming revival. The schedule lists numerous participants by name for each day from Monday through Friday with multiple leaders assigned, reflecting a vigorous congregational prayer effort ahead of the revival.
