Jim Maxwell, who fractured a collarbone after a fall from Silky Oak at Rosebery, returned to ride the same horse in Jumpers Flat. He finished second before the turn, but his shoulder pain limited him to sitting still as Silky Oak powered on to win in strong style.
Ted McMenamin earned praise for a strategic ride as Trince ridden by Fred Cash’s representative defeated Timurkhan in the Three and Four-Years-Old Welter Handicap at Ascot. Big bets fell on several runners while Tommy Pike and Jim Pike’s brother Timurkhan faced tough wagering scrutiny and final heartbreak. Warwick Lad failed to fire as betting shifted late.

Several other local horses including High Speech and Jocular posted quick times in lower trials ahead of Saturday’s big sprint.
At Ascot on Wednesday Grecian Art, a strong favorite in the Jumpers Flat, failed to win. Despite early fair progress and backing, the Doric gelding could not secure a clear run and finished out of the places as rivals surged past him in the straight.
