In a rugged sea yarn two Mackay brothers sail north seeking work and food. Alone survivor recalls a brutal night when a sudden reef strike shattered their boat and claimed a brother’s life amid storms frigate birds and dangerous seas.
A fragmentary diary style recount describes early daylight dangers at sea on September 22 1930. The narrator Liebout, gear damage, sailcloth torn, crew bailing, a dinghy filled with water, spuds lashed aboard, and fear of the boat sinking as a coral pool appears nearby.
A survivor recalls being adrift at sea during a cyclone. He describes sharks circling the dinghy, a desperate struggle for survival, and eventual rescue as daylight returns and a steamer cabin offers refuge aboard the Mackay cyclone.
