Fourth of July Association gathered Monday evening at Rutger Avenue, after vacations, to hear committee heads report. Treasurer shows $25.41 in bank. total receipts $400.25 and expenditures $374.84. Thanks expressed to all supporters.
Readable scraps hint at an 19th century poetry page. Mentions J M Cullen Bryant and poems with rustic country imagery and earth tones. Notes suggest a critique of a rhyme and a poet named Bryant.
Swarthmore College proceeds with construction of a new athletic field as part of its sports program. Prospective facilities promise space for various athletic events despite earlier construction difficulties.
At a September 6 Board of Health meeting, Swarthmore set October 2 1916 as opening date for schools. Health measures require physician certificates, two week residency for resident pupils, quarantine for non residents from infected districts, and caution on gatherings as cooler weather approaches. Citizens must report violations and unnamed children from infected districts must be quarantined.
The Epworth Bible Class for young women and men under Prof Pitman will resume at the usual Sunday School hour on September 17. The church tennis tournament is directed by Clarence Hannum during the pastor's absence. Ketels departed for a three week vacation and will return to preach on October 6. Rev Samuel B Gotf will occupy the pulpit this coming Sabbath as conference evangelist.
A heavy thunder storm struck Swarthmore last Friday bringing a tremendous downpour. The high wind turned umbrellas inside out and damaged shrubbery, trees, and a large plate glass window on Vassar Avenue.
The Delaware County W C T U will hold its annual convention at Swarthmore Presbyterian Church Har vard Avenue on Thursday September 21 starting 9 30 A M The executive meeting begins 1 15 P M with afternoon exercises at 2 00 and an address at 3 00 by Mrs Florence Atkin Tennessee a national lecturer and popular speaker A box luncheon will be served at noon.
Sermon by Rev John Ellery Tuttle quotes John 1 39 46 inviting all to come and see Jesus. The speaker argues Jesus welcomes inquiry from scholars and the ignorant, offering truth life and satisfaction through testimony from those who found him. The piece notes the Greeks request to see Jesus and ends noting continuation on Page Four.
The September meeting heard objections to curb and gutter plans on Park Avenue but approved curbs and gutters. Traffic and safety concerns prompted action while bids for Park Avenue repairs were authorized. An ordinance regulating dance halls was introduced and a pay-for-protection police plan was discussed.
Swarthmore enforces a strict quarantine after several infantile paralysis cases. Officers guard borough entrances, and cars and streetcars are checked. Children under 16 are denied entry to Ridley Township facilities and events.
Mr and Mrs Franklin Hardcastle Jr of New York City announce the birth of their son Franklin the third on September 5. The mother resides with her father Mr Charles Parker at 144 Park Avenue.
