A large audience attended the final Chautauqua of the season, praised for its moral and uplifting influence. Judge Lindsey and Dr. Isor Brooklyn highlighted social reform, child development, and the need for humane justice as paths to eradicating crime.
Swarthmore Tennis Club formally organized after two years of using Preparatory School courts. Founding members include H. C. Barr Thos E Boland George W Bond George H Bruce Carl H Chaffee R L Coates George A Eagan Wim S Evans John E Gensemer H B Green Wm A Jaquette L E Skinner Harlan Updegraff and E G Ward. By laws provide entrance fee monthly dues and a president secretary and treasurer with committees and meetings. Organizers hope to establish grounds and a modest clubhouse this fall for the spring season.
The W C T U of Swarthmore will conduct religious services at Media Jail this Sunday afternoon at 3 o clock. All interested are invited to attend.
The Trail Hitter, a new nonsectarian militant evangelism publication led by editor Walter D. Reynolds, enters town with a breezy tone. It is described as orthodox, lively, and alert, with a predicted long, robust life ahead.
A Junior Order of United American Mechanics council was instituted last week in Swarthmore as Benjamin West Jr. O U A M No. 187. The council opens with about forty charter members and meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday nights. It offers a $500 death claim and $5 weekly sick benefit after one year. Officers elected include Wm. M. Woodfin Jr. Post Counsellor and Elmer Patterson Counsellor with Lew. Warner as vice Counsellor and John H. Walker as Chaplain.
The Rev E Pigott Simkin formerly of Lancashire England preached a moving sermon from And there remaineth yet much land to be possessed. He urged self possession as essential to living the true life and conquering personal foes. He urged controlling likes and dislikes and prejudice. He spoke of humanity’s possibilities through a self controlled life modeled on Christ and predicted the downfall of autocracy under the law of love and mercy.
A circular from Mrs. Robert D. Coard calls Southwestern district club women to the State Federation of Pennsylvania Women annual meeting in Pittsburgh October 12 to 16. A district general meeting at the Hotel Schenley on September 15 at 2 PM will announce committees and set final entertainment plans for delegates with speaker Mrs. Percy V. Pennybacker of Texas among others.
Mr and Mrs Isaac J Clothier celebrated their golden wedding in Jamestown Rhode Island on September first. Further particulars will appear in the next issue.
Mrs John Duncan of Dartmouth Avenue dies after long illness on Saturday August 29. Cause of death is hemorrhage. She leaves a husband and daughter. Interment held Tuesday afternoon at East Lawn Cemetery.
The Civic Section of the Women's Club of Swarthmore sponsors a Home and Garden exhibit at the Club House on Saturday September 19 1914 from 3 to 6 and 7 to 9 PM Exhibits must be at the Club House by noon with owner name and return or sale status Adult and children’s prizes will be awarded. cooperation urged for another successful event.
Mr William Sheldrake died Thursday August 27 of gastritis. A 43 year old husband and father of four, he worked for Miss Gibbons for seven years and will be greatly missed. The burial was at Northwood.
