A twenty ton truck cracked a manhole cover in front of the American store on Park Avenue. With the hole yawning, a solution awaited welding and replacement of the cover. A police lantern was hung to warn traffic while the officer stood aside, pondering his misfortune.
The lawn fete at Mrs. R. F. Hickling’s residence last Saturday benefited the Second Corps Area Service Club No. 1. A good sum was added to the entertainment fund. The committee plans an event on Friday July 22 with Swarthmore hospitality. Swimming at the college pool and refreshments in Garrett woods on College Avenue are planned.
A Philadelphia paper reported Lehigh University professor Raymond W. Walters as a potential Swarthmore College dean. Dr. John A. Miller dismissed the claim saying Walters has been considered but no selection has been made.
John L Patterson operates a Ford car dealership and repair service in Swarthmore on the second floor of the Garage. He offers select models at reduced prices and provides attentive repair work for any machine in need.
Swarthmore Chautauqua Association will present an exhibition at Lititz Pennsylvania on Saturday July 30 marking the tenth anniversary of Chautauqua in Lititz one of the original thirty four towns Miss Frances Maxthe advance representative from Swarthmore will meet Lititz guarantors on Saturday July 9 to finalize plans for the event.
The Methodist Church announces a Thursday lawn fete on August 4 featuring cake and ice cream, homemade candy, a fish pond for children, and movie screenings. Reserve early for good eats and family fun.
Swarthmore raced to a 7 to 4 victory over Essington last Saturday afternoon in a lively baseball contest. Swarthmore players showed strong hitting and solid defense as they held off Essington rallies.
General Summerall at Camp Dix backs a house at 1927 Chestnut Street renovated by army authorities to entertain off duty soldiers. Mrs. Drexel chairs a 26 member auxilary board providing two weeks of service per member annually. Swarthmore volunteers assist as the project expands with picnics, dances, trips, and suppers planned for late July.
Budapest inventor Leopold Pollak proposes a house manufacturing plant in Philadelphia to cool homes like ice cellars. He claims summer cooling can be achieved at about 10 cents a day with a special house design and regulated system.
Voters must enroll in a party to qualify for the September primary. On July 19 and 20, polling places will accept party enrollment from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Registrars will be at Yale Avenue School, Borough Hall, and Avenue School from 10 to 3 and 6 to 9 p.m. on those dates.
Mrs. Harry Eller 28 of Plush Mills drowned in Crum Creek near Baltimore Pike during a Sunday bathing party. Her husband sank trying to help. he was revived at Media Hospital. Hugh Bonner and others rescued him but Eller’s body was not recovered until later. A 3-year-old boy lost his mother in the accident.
Miss Margaret Goodwin daughter of Mrs Frederick Watson Hadley of Swarthmore married D Thomas Curtin of Roslindale Boston at the Episcopal Church of Swarthmore on Saturday July 9. Rev Walter Mates officiated. Mrs Hadley gave her daughter in marriage and attended as matron of honor. Best man was Mr William Huff of Philadelphia. A buffet luncheon followed at the Hadley home. The couple will reside in Roslindale after a wedding journey.
Dr. W. A. Alexander former Swarthmore College dean and his family plan to depart the borough around July 24. Swarthmore friends express regret and praise his loyal support to the local paper and community.
Rose Tree Hunt officials report the autumn meet will run October 19 through 22 as notified by the National Steeplechase Hunt Association New York. Samuel D. Riddle owner of Man o War has leased the old track for training and improvements. The racing committee includes Emanuel Hey chairman Walter M Jeffords Roy Jackson Walter L Rhoades and George W Orton. The club house, wrecked by a boiler explosion, is being rebuilt to be ready for the meet.
National Association of Organists holds its 14th annual convention at Wanamaker's July 26 to 29 with practical talks on tone and construction, recitals, round tables, demonstrations by Ernest Skinner Haskell and Brown, and a wireless organ concert from Pittsburgh's Carnegie Institute heard in Philadelphia.
Swarthmore Boy Scouts began a two week camp at Delmont last Saturday led by senior patrol leader Sidney Johnson. Scouts listed include Borden Sharp, Ephraim Smith, Donald Jones, Louis Skinner, John Pittock, Hulburt Douglas, Joe Walters, Chalmers Stuart, Ernest Knoblauch, Burgess, and Daniel Johnson.
The drowning of a young mother in Crum Creek last Sunday shocks residents. The Fire Co pulmotor aided in the rescue effort while local families, including Mr. and Mrs. Everton Ramsey and their daughters, plan two week trips to Atlantic City and Camp Delmont.
