Mr. Lewis Heck, with ten years in Turkey in U S government service, will lecture on Near East Problems at the Wo ms Club House next Tuesday evening. He offers audience questions at the end and presents firsthand knowledge from wartime service and postarmistice postings.
The post office will be closed on Washington's Birthday with limited mail service and elections. Operators face ongoing labor issues after a fire, affecting sales and equipment, yet hopes remain for restoration in the Shirer building as the department adapts to the handicap.
N Robinson was elected to the Pennsylvania Con Social Welfare at a Reading convention last week for his commendable municipal court work in Philadelphia.
Mrs W Wayne Babcock of Lane Rydal announces the birth of a daughter named Jane Butler Babcock. The mother is formerly Marion Watters of ire.
The Swarthmore Civic League, a mixed gender organization, formed at a large meeting Tuesday evening. Mrs John Kler Tyuttle chaired the Civic Committee of Woman's Club. Dr Farringer read and the constitution was adopted. Mrs Brooks presented nominations and officers were elected unanimously.
The Winter Concert of the Wo mans Club Chorus directed by Sylvano Thunder was held Monday evening February 16 at the Club House. A male quartet featuring Black Hitchcock Wood and Johnson and a ladies quartet led by Effing Wickam Ashton and Cheney performed two numbers. Thunder played piano solos and the chorus showed strong form under his leadership.
Leonard E Auty died Tuesday morning of heart trouble at his nephew William H Brearley’s residence on Vassar Avenue. A Yorkshire born tenor, he gained fame across the Eastern states and in England Scotland and Canada as an oratorio singer. He sang as tenor soloist at Keneseth Israel Temple Philadelphia St Clements Church Philadelphia and Grace Church New York. His clear voice enunciation and musicianship made him renowned beyond America.
Under the Home Economics Committee Mrs Bishop chairs a program at the club on Tuesday March 17 at 3 00. Mrs Boden a Fair Price Commission member has worked to combat the high cost of living in the Philadelphia district and warrants a good audience.
A call for canteen volunteers reached Swarthmore as Philadelphia Hospital faced overcrowded wards. Nurses were overworked while several Swarthmore women joined the effort and produced pneumonia jackets and masks for patients.

At a Health and Recreation Committee meeting chaired by Mrs. Turner Dr. Neufeld state medical inspector described the Pennsylvania State Health Commission. He noted the state’s organized structure with county medical inspectors and local health boards and urged town residents to join health schools and study twice weekly health lessons.
Prof. Joseph H. Willits of the University of Pennsylvania argues the core issue is aligning human development with economic growth. He cites extreme industrial specialization making work monotonous and notes workers seek solutions through their organizations, with the Federation of Labor favoring strikes for better pay and hours.

Swarthmore Woman’s Christian Temperance Union held a reception at Mrs Margret M Barber’s home last Wednesday afternoon. President Mrs Roy B Champion urged new members and emphasized continued work, inviting all to monthly meetings on the third Wednesday. Mrs A J Jones sang Teach Me to Pray. Mrs Henry B Cookman was absent.
The Swarthmore News reports the death of Robert K. Sheppard, longtime community figure renowned for leadership and neighborliness. Former Swarthmore resident, he moved to Akron and then Newton, Massachusetts with his family, leaving behind his daughter Ruth who studied locally.
Mrs Emma M Selfridge widow of Gen James Levan Selfridge died at the Harvard on Saturday February 14 Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Oliver H Bair Building 1820 Chestnut Street Philadelphia Rev J E Tuttle officiating Interment was at Bethlehem where the husband and son are buried She had not lived in Swarthmore many years but was loved by many friends.

Mrs. H H Brooks enjoys an extensive Florida trip visiting famed resorts. Mr and Mrs Albert Ainsworth spent last weekend in Atlantic City. Dr Paul M Pearson gave a Plantation Days lecture at Emerson Club during the Reciprocity Luncheon. A Valentine Tea hosted Golden Rule Society members from Philadelphia Chester and Drexel Hill. J Raymond Henderson becomes media lumber yard representative. Civic League meeting fosters optimism for its future with notes on Swarthnote improvements. Washington's Birthday set for Monday February 23. Mrs Bucher Ayres fell on an icy walk last Tuesday. Louis A Winne hosted dinner and a weekend house party at the Club House with guests Lester Jefferies Isabelle Martin Dorothy Durbin Charles Jones Charles Connor George Townson.
