An Oriental Themed Benefit for Scholarship Fund
An oriental music event "An ease in Japan" will be held on Saturday 16 to raise funds for the Immunity Welfare Club scholarship. The program features Japanese costume and performances by socially prominent participants in Oriental style. Admission is 25 cents with ice cream and home baked cake available. tickets support education for worthy girls at industrial schools.

Swarthmore Holds First Community Patriotic Service
In response to a bugle call Swarthmore residents gathered at Swarthmore Preparatory School for a community patriotic service. Dr. H. Ellis led the meeting with remarks on national unity as Rev. Samuel Adams offered prayer and readings. The assembly, directed by Chas Hirst, sang patriotic hymns and Mrs. A J Jones performed America. Names of mothers and sailors who joined Swarthmore homes to serve were read by Mr. Yarnall, and a wartime message to the boys and a noonday prayer closed the observance.

Detectives Trace Farm Hand John Knowles in Missing Horse Heist
John Knowles a 19 year old farm hand for C H Marshall left on July 14 to visit a ill mother in New York. On July 15 a horse and carriage disappeared from the Marshall barn prompting County Detective O Toole and county officers to investigate. They found Knowles had a room at a Chester Greek restaurant and had shipped a trunk on the night of the 15th. He telegraphed plans to go to New York to a silk mill worker in Marcus Hook.

Ruling on Sugar Canning Certificates Relaxed in Delaware Co
Frederick A. Howard Food Administrator of Delaware County announces the suspension of County Administrator approval for canning certificates. Retailers may sell sugar in 25 pound lots or less for canning after a consumer signs at the store. Certificates are mailed weekly to the County Food Administrator for redemption with distribution certificates given in exchange. Retailers must use strict judgment in issuing canning certificates.
Fashions of Long Ago Parade at Swarthmore Meeting House
On July 17 a unique event drew 43 participants from Swarthmore ages three to fifty as they paraded in costumes from past decades at the Friends Meeting House. A brief program followed featuring a tribute to ladies of long ago by Charles Paxson, dialect poems by Mrs. Charles Temple, and a poem by Margaret Paxson.

Swarthmore Gardens Support War Era Canning Drive
Swarthmore News reports citizens may donate surplus produce to the College Settlement of Philadelphia for canning. Two clubs for women operate at 433 Christian street and 502 Front street, with a children’s canning club planned. Canteen workers aid four thousand men and more
The Red Cross Canteen Department served 4141 men and 42 women on Saturday at Swarthmore. Volunteers dressed in white with horizon blue veils organized at station platforms and Canteen Headquarters. A B&O station effort served southern labor battalions with white officers, featuring clog dancing and a spirituals performance that moved the service members.
