A Melbourne horse named Avenger is fancied to contend in the Victoria Derby and Cantala Stakes as attention turns to the prestigious Melbourne Cup meeting at Flemington. The betting market highlights Avenger as a leading contender for both races.
The Keilor St Albans Water Trust meets tonight amid debate on the legality of municipal contributions. The St Albans Progress Association watches closely and awaits the meeting’s outcome before pursuing a district water proposal.
The fourth case of infantile paralysis in Sunshine was a two year old child reported this week. Parents are urged to keep children in their yards and avoid crowded congregations and visits to juvenile friends.

At Ballarat Road near Sunshine a court case heard William Knox sue William Leslie McDonald of the permanent Military Forces for 35 pounds 10 shillings damages after a Sunday afternoon collision that left Knox injured. McDonald testified a dirt skid caused by loose metal led to the crash. witnesses supported Knox. The magistrate awarded 35 pounds 10 shillings damages and 15 pounds 10 shillings costs.
The Rev. A. A. Lyons of Sun Shine earned silver medals at the National Rose Society show for Hybrid Perpetual and a red rose. He also took two second prizes for a bowl of roses and three distinct roses.
Braybrook council’s parks and gardens committee, led by Dr W E Glendenning, debated Sunshine Park upgrading on Monday. The engineers were asked to include terracing and a salamander path, keep trees, and consider recreation uses and picnics.
At the monthly hall committee meeting the library was discussed with many new books added but few readers. The joining fee will be abolished and only book hire charged. A card party at Mrs N Self's tomorrow to raise Girls' Gymnasium funds, with a food evening to draw attendees.
Rain curtailed one day cricket saw Northcote Diggers win by three runs over Sunshine Diggers. Northcote posted 41 with Lyons 11 not out and Parsons 0 among top scores. Judd and Banks took key wickets. Sunshine reply totaled 38 as Ellingsen and Secombe led scoring before rain interrupted further play.
