An elderly Sunshine Road resident Mrs Theresa Evelyn Kleine aged 62 collapsed and died at her home yesterday. She leaves a husband and several grown children. The funeral will be held tomorrow at Foot Railway Cemetery.
An 8.50 am city to Sunshine train failed to brake promptly on slippery rails and crashed into the gates at Hampshire Road crossing. The gates were closing as rain fell. no pedestrians were present, so there were no serious consequences despite considerable damage.
Police were alerted to a reported car theft from a Sunshine garage. The vehicle was found at Deer Park seemingly damaged. The owner admitted driving the car during an accident to hide it from his family, and will face prosecution for wasting police time.
Sixteen years after Albion Lodge of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows formed with help from Alex Scott, membership rose sixteenfold since 1921 in Sunshine. Founders and leaders included G. L. Coulter, Grand Master of Victoria, then Grand Secretary, and foundation Noble Grand H. Blakey, shaping the lodge’s early progress.
Final figures show Casey securing a clear majority in the Corio election results. Voters backed Casey amid local concerns, with turnout high across precincts and officials beginning formal certification.
The Albion Lodge sponsored a lodge at Deer Park with a dedication ceremony held at the Deer Park hall on Wednesday. Grand Master J. R. Akehurst and Grand Lodge officers presided before an attendance of 75 members who installed officers led by G. Bro. A. Ritchie as G., Opie as W.G., D. Gray as Guardian, J. B. Salmond as Warden, Sister A. Arbuthnot as Secretary, W. Stevenson as Assistant Secretary, R. Norris as Treasurer, and trustees A. Thomas, R. Gray, and T. Opie. Congratulatory speeches were delivered by J. R. Akehurst and G. L. Coulter.
This week the Sunshine Theatre began remodelling and expects completion in about three months. No interruption to film showings during work. Mr FP Gunn of Sunshine is overseeing the project.
At the Sunshine court Messra W J Andrew and J Gourley J P heard John Joseph Haggis charged with driving a motor car whose noise and smell violated police regulations. Constable David Power said the vehicle in Hampshire Road on October 2 created a terrific noise and smoke with crowds nearby on election night. The Bench fined 5 shillings, the first case of its kind before the court.
In Sunshine this morning an estate agent acting for the owner secured an eviction order against a tenant as remodel plans proceed. The tenant pleaded difficulty finding another home, and the bench granted extra time to vacate. Similar cases have appeared in recent months as demand for housing rises.
Attendance exceeds 400 at Nettlefolds Cup Eve dance with long lasting mayhem notables Nicky and Nancy Lee at 11 p.m. and Mickey Powell later. Guests enjoyed novelties until 3 a.m. and still danced at 4 a.m. The Nettlefolds Sports and Social Club will clear about £20 from the event.
A traveling circus planned to set up on railway land but a anonymous decision maker intervened. Railways officials revoked permission to use the site, forcing the troupe to abandon the project and close quietly overnight, much to local parents' relief.
In its Parliament report the Housing Investigation and Slum Abolition Board notes Braybrook districts as potential sites for permanent worker housing. Board members, while not naming exact localities, voiced optimism about economic development in several large Braybrook areas seen during a prior inspection. Parliament has not yet acted on the report.
