Expressions of regret followed the sudden death of Mrs Reg Barclay wife of T R Reg Barclay of Graham Street. She had been in ill health for months and collapsed while her husband was taking her to a Melbourne medical specialist. She leaves two children Reg and Betty.
In Caulfield Cup selections the author favors Talking to with strong praise asserting he has all attributes of a champion. Other nominees listed include Burwood, Pantoon, Mona Nursery, Sir Harold and Aurie's Star among many.
The Mothers' Club of St. Albans held their monthly euchre with Mrs Honey winning first prize and Mrs Smith taking the consolation award. After the cards a surprise party celebrated Mrs Cole's birthday with a twelve candle cake, followed by a sing of For She's a Jolly Good Fellow. The Wednesday concert for the Happy Circle was cancelled at the last minute.
At Altona on Sunday a Sunshine club golf match saw Gunga Odin lead early but Scottie leveled with a 15 ft putt on 18 and won on the 19th. Arthur Dinnell beat A W Brazener for the afternoon handicap, while young W Cecilion impressed with a 39 out. A drive went out of bounds and was ruled wrongly. The event ended with pie eating and The Big Axe showing top form at dinner.
A lengthy Kei lorshire council meeting dragged from 10.15 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. with 66 correspondence items. Proposals from St Albans Progress Association on meetings, foot bridge, and rate payment were rejected. Council kept 250 offered for rates, decided to pursue uncollected rate collection, ordered drainage repairs, disposed of an old road roller for 25, and debated buying a motor truck.
The Sun shine Horticultural Society held a well attended meeting led by vice president Mr F Bennett who spoke on chrysanthemums. Plans include a cottage garden competition with January entries and two judgings in February and April, plus a spring show on October 27.
A representative civic gathering at the Masonic Hall last night farewelled Sunshine branch manager F C Horton after six years of service. The event featured speeches by Dr W R Dempster and others, presentations of crystal ware and gifts for Mrs Horton and their children, and a toast to the Banking Fraternity. Jack Lyle was named as his successor and lauded for continuing Horton’s legacy in Sunshine and Sunbury.
The Nettlefolds Sports and Social Club stages a monster dance from 9 p.m. Cup Eve to 6 a.m. Cup Day. Richards' free bus departs Hartley's Sports Depot at 40 p.m. and returns at 6 a.m. Nancy Lee and Nicky from 3AW, radio contest winners, perform on stage and mingle with guests. Mickey Powell arrives from Sydney to demonstrate latest dances amid snappy music and supper.
