A cavalry officer orders his batman to clean old riding breeches to avoid buying a new pair. The batman sabotages the cleaning on purpose, claiming the ammonia worked, then remarks the breeches fit him after the botched job.
James Smith of Sydney Street Sunshine faced three charges of defrauding the Susten ance department. Magistrate W J Andrew warned claimants to tell the truth. Evidence showed mis-stated son’s wages and household income. Smith had been drawing sustenance for 14 weeks. He was fined £2 on each charge with default distress.
The Keilor Recreation Reserve hosts a Keilor Shire picnic on Saturday October 19 with catering and amusements for children. A pedestrian events program is planned with a points system and single-entry rules for most events. At 3 pm the new gates to the reserve, dedicated to the memory of the late Dr J D McFarlane, will be dedicated.
The Caulfield meeting features the Guineas with 12 final acceptors and Valiant Chief as favourite. Valiant Chief impressed in the Quality Handicap and is backed to beat rivals including Young Idea Carnarvon and Eastern Monarch colt Hadrian in a strong three year old program. Rest of card lists selections for classic races and place bets on Burlesque and Spartan.
Winnie Wood of 290 High Street St Kilda and Thema Loudon of Charles Street Footscray were fined 5 shillings with 5 shillings costs each at Sunshine court for traveling without tickets on the Deer Park train on August 19 morning.
Sassella Park hosted a Saturday sports meeting with a fair crowd. The cycling track and other arrangements were prepared as cycling and horse events dominated the day. Minor events gained support while the Sunshine District Band performed a fine music program. Financial results are expected to compare favorably with prior meetings.
Sunshine Progress Association met last week to push for better delivery to First and Second Avenues. They plan a night clearance for postal receivers to avoid posting at the railway station and seek a sub post office at Albion for local residents.
An October 20 benefit concert at the Sunshine Town Hall is organized to aid the family of the late Henry Powell killed in the Deer Park explosion. The New port Workshops Brass Band will lead a march from the railway station to the hall, with Sunshine and Footscray Ambulance Brigades and Druids Lodge members joining. A public meeting will form a strong committee, and a ladies’ meeting is set for the Town Hall next Wednesday to arrange refreshments.
Sole Brothers bring a strong troupe to Sunshine with Flying Dunbars Charibert Brothers English Acrobats and other acts. Andrew Sole will perform with trained lions and tigers that shocked him earlier. The show features elephants greyhounds trick horses and riders after a successful Melbourne run.
