Mac reports an accident to the skipper after Randy, a deck hand, is swept overboard by a bucket. Mel explains that Randy is vanished from the ship, while the skipper seeks details about the missing man and the crew’s response.
George Douglas Bell of Stawell faced Burshine Court on a charge of being drunk in charge of a motor car in Ballarat Road on September 29. Constable Wightman testified a car collided with the rear of a police car at about 4 pm after Bell appeared intoxicated. Dr Gowland examined Bell and found some impairment but concluded he was not clearly unable to drive. The bench, presided by Mr Re Mohr P.M, dismissed the case.
A pedometer study tracked a housewife as she carried out daily tasks for two days and registered 164 miles. Extrapolated over 45 years this equals about 254000 miles, suggesting housewives and postmen walk most in daily duties, while a shop girl may average over six miles daily.
St Albans notes report Mr Batten remains an inmate at Melbourne Hospital with slow recovery after two operations. The Women's Hospital auxiliary plans a monthly meeting next Wednesday with all members expected. The hall committee meets Monday and the Progress Association holds its monthly and annual meeting Tuesday. Mrs Collity of Sunshine won half ton of box blocks from the Linton Tennis Club function. Funeral of Thomas Brown at Footscray cemetery featured the 1.0.R. Lodge service led by Bro. J Downing. Coffin bearers were J Patten J Johnson Gray L Dell. Pall bearers included E J Luxford, McKechnie, Dr F Stenson, H Schmidt, W King, O M Eliason, Self, A J Clarke. Wreaths from employees, public bodies and lodges noted. Funeral arrangements handled by R B Penn.
Owing to the late sitting of the Sunshine court today the account of a very interesting case could not be published in this issue. When The Advocate went to press at 4 pm, other cases were still being heard.
Lucknow details a racing card featuring the October Hurdle with The Minor, Brilliant Son, and Revision. It lists Maribyrnong trial stakes for fillies and colts, with horses such as Perianth, Bretby, Queen Bess, Sir Geraint, Gilded Youth, Beechwood, and St. Fervent. Records include the Stand Wandigar and Handicap divisions, and best each way bets on The Minor and Shadow King. Randwick selections preview the A J C Derby, while the Epsom Handicap features Synagogue and Sir John among contenders.
John Leslie Murphy of Flemington was charged in Sunshine court with three counts of larceny at Deer Park between June and September 195. Employed by contractors on a Deer Park building project under Phillips, he stole rope from Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd a plane and two pick heads from A G another contractor. After plea of guilty he said other material on site had been returned but admitted taking the smaller items. He sought leniency citing a sick wife. A constable noted he had returned the property but imposed a fine of £3 with nine days imprisonment default.
Last week Braybrook council pursued rate recovery under the Local Government Act. The notice urged prompt settlement to avoid drastic action due to failing to pay rates within the allowed time.
Linden Fairweather of Ballarat faced a Sunshine Court charge for carrying passengers from Ballarat to Melbourne on May 28 without a licence. The defendant argued the police witness hired the car for 10 and was not carried as a separate fare. The bench reduced the price, and Fairweather was fined £6 with 12 costs and a 28 day stay. A further charge on June 7 earned a £5 fine.
Arrangements are made for a benefit concert to aid Mrs H Powell following her husband’s death in the Deer Park explosion. The event is set for Sunday October 29 at 3.15 p.m. in Sunshine Town Hall.
