Plans show the H. V. McKay Memorial Baby Health Centre and Girl Guide Hall open for inspection. The building sits back from Hamp shire Road and Corio Street with lawns and a foyer entrance. Ground floor houses the Baby Health Centre and waiting room. second floor hosts the Girl Guides main hall, a kitchen, and dressing room. Estimated cost is £1775.
The secretary records donations to the fund for a memorial. Contributors include D B Ferguson 10 pounds A Carland 3 shillings 3 pence Forbes 2 shillings 2 pence Mrs R June Kirby 1 shilling 1 pence L McLennan 1 shilling 1 pence T Cripps 10 pence F W C 6 pence. Total 13 shillings 2 pence. Donors urged to help start erection soon.
The annual Children’s Ball at Our Lady’s Church Sunshine drew a full hall last night with 120 children in fancy dress. Judges Mesdames Bell and Bradley and Miss Ryan faced a tough task awarding prizes after months of prep by the Sisters of St Joseph. Mrs Gibbs served as secretary and Cyril Gibbs acted as Master of Ceremonies as the children enjoyed supper.
Mr. Gilbert Penrose long a Sunshine draper now leads two churches in Richmond as part of the Home Mission Service. He once studied for the ministry but left that path on medical advice. Arthur Pratt paid 10 shillings fine plus 7 shillings 6 pence costs at Sunshine Court for trespassing on railway property after leaving the platform by a non exit at 7 56 a m on September 26.
Donations are expected promptly with pledges collected. Building lanes are visible in shop windows across Sunshine and may be inspected at the Shire Hall and Advocate Office for public viewing.
Bernard Terence Calnan of 29 Ridley Street Sunshine faced street betting charges after police evidence showed him taking bets and recording entries on October 15 1938. Constable Wallace and gaming officers testified to the betting activity and a subsequent arrest led to a £20 fine with two months imprisonment in default and seven days stay for appeal.
A matching charge against John Gwatkin on the same date was dropped due to no reliable identification. Constable Wallace described the bettor as dark and 6ft 9in, while Gwatkin is fair and 6ft tall, accounting for the discrepancy.
Secretary-Manager records gifts to the Footscray and District Outpatients and Welfare Centre. Donations include H. V. McKay Massey-Haring Pty Ltd and Employees Subvention Fund £75. Hospital Sunday collections £3 from Rev F T Ryder Our Lady's Church Sunshine £3 10s from Rev T A Gair St Johns Footscray £1 6d Church of Christ Raleigh Street Footscray £1 6d and £12 0s 4d from Massed Bands Recital proceeds at Footscray Cricket Ground per the Mayor of Footscray.
