Councillors divided over aiding the speedway company after losses from bad weather and a tram strike. An amendment to refuse was carried while supporters urged presenting figures to the Council. Proponents argued the council benefited from the venture and hoped for a bargain on remaining installations.
The third annual sports meeting and carnival at Errington Reserve tomorrow March 25 starts at 2 p.m. Events include cycling athletics nail driving bowling guessing weight of sheep and side shows with a Gift of 130 yards as the main attraction. Trophies will be presented at 2 p.m. in the evening under the patronage of Shire Presidents of Keilor and Braybrook.
Miss Joyce Cronin daughter of Mr and Mrs T Cronin of Station Road Deer Park departs Friday March 24 to take up an appointment as Assistant Teacher at the European school in Nauru after two years teaching at Tottenham.
The hospital carnival closes due to heavy rain while organisations prepare for finalising the lucky draw. Winners include James Wood 22 High St Sunshine first prize, Master J Gilbert 64 Forrest St Sunshine second, Mrs M Baker 126 Morris St Sunshine third. Miss Colin Ellingsen wins Shire President’s special prize of £1 1s. A final draw and dividend cheques are planned with results published next week.
Miss Lillian May McKinnon married Eric Osterlund at Paisley Street Baptist Church Footscray in a chantilly lace gown with orange blossom veil. Bridesmaids in pastel frocks attended. 120 guests dined at the Mason ic Hall. Honeymoon planned to Hepburn Springs as couple departed in lime green travelling suit.
Laura Filsie Willan married Leonard Joseph Murley at Sunshine Presbyterian Church with a lace gown over moire taffeta and pearl cloker. Attendants Joyce Masson and Jack Murley, reception held at Masonic Hall after the ceremony conducted by Rev. F Sadler with ninety guests.
The Council endorsed a Municipal Association recommendation to eliminate party politics from municipal affairs. Dr Dobson opposed, warning of intrusion into elected representatives’ duties, while Drayton and Pennell supported keeping police out of discussions and maintaining Braybrook tradition.
At Braybrook Council meeting Dr Barclay urged migrants be told prosecutions may follow if they do not remove temporary structures. Health Inspector Dix reported eight structures north of Kororoit Creek on Ballarat Road and seven south of the creek off Forrest Street, largely temporary. The council decided to review each case and circulate the Shire regulation on temporary swellings printed in German.
With only one dissentient, local ice vendors voted this week to raise household block prices by 1d to 1/8. The Association opposes the Metropolitan Ice Manufacturers 5/- per ton hike and fights the impost. Sunshine vendors ignore Association instruction, likely complicating the executive’s campaign.
The Auxiliary of Albion Kindergarten holds a Sale Day on a Friday at 2 pm in Albion Progress Hall inviting community participation and listing details for the event.
