Braybrook Council will refer the question to the Minister of Public Works after a citizens public meeting protested a land rezoning in North Sunshine from residential to factory. Dr Barrett moved to refer the matter, noting it aligns with the meeting’s decision. Dr Barclay supported presenting the facts to the Minister.
Braybook Council approved linking Maribyrnong and Fontscray tram lines with a preferred Mitchell Street route. Tramways Board favors Gordon Street via River Street to Williamsons Road, cheaper by £24,000 and to be started earlier. Council also authorized a scheme to extend tram lines along Ballaratta, crediting Cr A F Shepherd for Board action after years of agitation.
Acting on a Footscray Council suggestion Braybrook Shire Council will protest any rise in gas prices. Footscray has already protested to the Prime Minister over an alleged application for a gas price increase by the Colonial Gas Association.
Doctors Barclay Barrett and Parsons form a sub committee to meet the Selwyn Park Committee and the Cricket Association on the turf wicket issue for Selwyn Park.
Braybrook Councillors considered installing a heating system to ease the icy blasts in the council chamber and municipal offices. Quotations received on Monday exceeded £900, prompting the decision to drop the idea amid a remark by Dr. Barclay that there is enough hot air in the room.
Dr Dobson told Braybrook council last Monday that odours from the noxious trades area are intensifying. He warned the stronger smells may affect residents in the Housing Commission area.
Personal news reports Mr. and Mrs. Max Hargreaves celebrate their marriage at Queen's College Chapel with Rev Dr Calvert Barber. Pastor Brian Carr will address a Baptist Church Youth Service Sunday at 7 p.m. Fresh from discharge from the AIF he previously served Sunshine Church briefly before resuming ministry studies. He will recall experiences at Tobruk and El Alamein and extend a cordial invitation to visitors.
A Shire public meeting formed a committee led by Cr A G Pennell to enter Miss Braybrook Shire in the 1947 Miss Australia Quest. Entered contestants include Lasen Presser Pat Kelly and Estelle Leckie, with subcommittees forming and donations invited through the Shire Hall.
Sunshine Masonic Social Committee's Food for Britain Ball at Shire Hall drew about 300 dancers last Friday. Mr L Guy led the event with novelty dances winning prizes. A marvellous supper was provided by the ladies, with many local donors thanked for their contributions.
The Sunshine Branch of the A.L.P has selected Mr. M. E. Freeman to contest the Southern Riding at the August Council Elections. Freeman, a treasurer and State Electorate Council delegate, resides at 164 Morris Bt. and has lived in Sunshine for 11 years while working at the Massey Harris Harvester Works.
The Younger Set invites all to Old Time Re Union Night at the Masonic Hall on Thursday July 1 at 8 15 p m with a program for all ages. Mr Geo Nutting will MC. Monte Carlo and Lucky Spot prizes promised. Admission is a and supper provided.
The council granted £25 to the Ladies Benevolent Society. A street trees request from the 8.E.C. was referred to the foreman gardener. The Housing Commission announced a contract let to the Dollsmgen Housing Factory for 64 concrete houses in Richelieu Burns and other Maidstone streets.
Obituary for Trefor Glyn Davies of 74 King Edward Ave Sunshine who died July 22 at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. Born in South Wales three years ago, he leaves a widow and two young children. Funeral held Wednesday, remains buried at Fant cray Cemetery with large attendance. Rev A H Small conducted services. Nelson Bros oversaw arrangements amid floral tributes.
Mrs Catherine Wilson Stevenson of Hyde Street Deer Park died at a private hospital at 18. She was born in Scotland and wife of Dr William Young Stevenson. Survived by husband and two young children. Funeral held at Nelson Bros Chapel Footscray with cremation at Fawkner Crematorium. Large family gathering and many floral tributes noted.
Frederick Duff a well known Sunshine identity and former staffer for H V McKay Massey Harris died at Private Hospital after a brief illness. A bachelor who came from Scotland after WWI, he worked for the company until his final illness and was active in football and local Masonic groups. Funeral held at Footscray Cemetery with Nelson Bros. Footscray arranging.
Shirley Gunner aged 15 from Maidstone was killed instantly on a Wednesday morning while cycling to school in Ballarat Road when struck by a semi trailer truck. Three other girls riding with her were present. it is believed she swung into the truck as it passed and was thrown to the ground.
