Israeli Forces Deepen Push Into Lebanon in Major Assault
Israeli armored columns and infantry pressed into southern Lebanon in a two front attack supported by aircraft and artillery. Bridges across the Litani were bombed, guerrilla bases hit, and nine villages reported occupied as Lebanese forces and Palestinians fought back. Casualties were reported on all sides with Israel claiming many guerrillas killed or captured and Lebanese reports of nine soldiers killed. The attack followed Golda Meir's vow to strike with all might and follows the Munich Games tragedy. Yasser Arafat and Hafiz Assad were cited as directing or supporting operations from the region.
