National White Cane Day Observed in West Virginia

Robert L. Hunt, president of the West Virginia Federation of the Blind, announces that Oct. 15 is National White Cane Safety Day. He notes the state White Cane Travel Law requires drivers to stop near intersections and crosswalks to protect blind pedestrians guided by a cane or guide dog. Hunt urges motorists to be cautious when they see a white or metallic cane extended forward. The Federation and State Vocational Rehabilitation Division report rising cane travel among the blind, with mobility training at the State Rehabilitation Center and Institute. Ashworth emphasizes independence in cane travel as a precursor to vocational training and job placement.
