D. M. Thomas of Virginia Beach was among those killed when a Mohawk Airlines jetliner crashed near Blossburg Pennsylvania on Friday. The victim was the son of the late D. M. Thomas, former mayor of Jerome Park. Public figures noted include Richard D. Duncan, reappointed to the State Arts and Humanities Council by Gov. Hulett C. Smith. In other news, Meredith Wilson of Morgantown was elected national treasurer of the Kappa Phi Club and installed with new officers Saturday.

U S paratroopers suffered a grim defeat as two Lost Platoons were surrounded by North Vietnamese forces high on a mountain ridge near Cambodia and Laos. Seventy six Americans died with six wounded survivors from the platoons and nineteen more injured in rescue attempts. The battle involved the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 24th North Vietnamese Division. The clash followed a heavy air and ground assault including reported body counts of hundreds of enemy dead and extensive looting of food and gear from the wounded. Other Vietnam War actions included bombings on Nam Dinh and clashes in An Lao Valley with Viet Cong casualties.
United Nations New York Israeli sources released documents claimed as captured UAR operations orders. They show May 17 bomb plans against Israeli airfields and Port Elath with napalm, aiming to destroy the other on the ground. Egyptian confirmation was not obtained.
An Israeli source says captured wartime orders translated from Arabic describe concentrated air attacks on central and southern targets. The May 17 Eastern Air Command directive orders fighter and light bombers to strike nearly simultaneously, with timing not specified.
SAIGON An analysis of two months of hamlet elections shows power stays with traditional local leaders. A Vietnamese government study of 4 476 hamlets reports winners by occupation: farmers 2263 former hamlet officials 1676 businessmen 284 and former civil servants 247.
Seoul reports on the anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War as Communist forces attacked and ignited conflict on the peninsula. The event ended a five year uneasy peace and reflected Cold War tensions.
President Johnson at his Johnson City ranch prepared for a Sunday summit with Soviet Premier Kosygin at Hollybush New Jersey.
