Ringers and Rivalries Mark WVU Wesleyan Football Era
In the early 20th century WVU and Wesleyan used ringers to gain an edge in their fierce football rivalry. The 1911 game featured Margie Gardner as Harry Tetrick, prompting WVU to demand Gardner be removed. The 1920s saw scandals with Penn State players impersonated as locals, leading to suspensions and restored relations. Also notes Billy Hillen, 1954 iron man end, ill in Vanderbilt hospital awaiting transplant.
