GOP aims to unite behind a single candidate for ahead of primaries
The GOP hopes to unite early behind a single candidate, possibly state Attorney General Jack Danforth. California offers several strong rivals to Sen. John Tunney, including Houston Fournoy, Rep. Barry Goldwater Jr., and former HEW Secretary Robert Finch. Stevens notes potential trouble in New York and Hawaii, where Fong’s retirement could hand the seat to Patsy Mink or Spark Matsunaga. Buckley’s NY bid as Conservative faces GOP moderates opposition, risking a Democratic win if split. Democrats hold 61 seats to 38 with New Hampshire’s seat still unresolved from last year.

A May 22 hearing before the Air Pollution Control Commission could lead to a decision soon as firms push to relax the secondary sulfur dioxide standard to 1978 levels. Ed Light counters with EPA and APHA findings predicting thousands of extra deaths, respiratory cases, and days lost to illness across the region.
