Doctors' freedom plot thwarted in East Germany
BERLIN UP I A West German newspaper says East German security services arrested 50 East Berlin doctors for plotting to flee to the West. About 80 more doctors escaped in the first six months of this year, some with as many as five family members. The mass arrests were intended to frighten others into abandoning plans to leave. East Germany seeks evidence that escapees used transit routes to the West, potentially prompting new limits. Neues Deutschland accuses the West of fabricating wall incident stories ahead of the World Youth Festival. West Berlin police say a refugee was killed at the French sector border, while East German reports dispute details.
