Senate committee blocks Godley for East Asia post
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee rejects G McMurtrie Godley as assistant secretary of state for East Asia. The move signals renewed congressional push to reclaim foreign policy influence and avoid executive overreach amid the Vietnam era. Fulbright McGovern Muskie and liberal Republicans frame it as healing old wounds from Tonkin Gulf, the Dominican invasion, and Nixon’s diplomacy. Godley’s secrecy driven Laos War stance and abrasive style are cited, with officials predicting a future Europe post after a diplomatic holding period.
