Mountaineer Coal creates plant to treat acid mine water

Mountaineer Coal Company plans to pump acid water from a new discharge point to the Williams Mine treatment plant this summer. Despite sludge forming several tons daily, the plant will adapt to the changing chemical makeup of mine drainage. A three million gallon pond feeds a 1000 foot line to the plant where water is neutralized and used to clean coal. President David H. Davis calls it voluntary, not benefitting Consol, but a substantial neighborly investment.
