Marines Capture Hill 689 Victory in Week-long Battle

UPI reports Marines claimed victory on Hill 689 two miles west of Khe Sanh after a week of fighting that left about 40 Marines dead and 150 wounded while North Vietnamese losses were estimated at 140 killed. The hill’s capture followed heavy artillery and close combat as Marines withdrew from Khe Sanh and then regrouped to contain the Communist assault. Heroics of Lt. Col. Archie Van Winkle and Private Huey Roark were highlighted as pivotal in repelling mortars and reinforcements during the final phases.
