Ford appeals to labor and Congress to back plan

President Ford, at a Labor Day dinner with AFL CIO leaders led by George Meany, urged compromise on his economic program. He warned against getting hung up on minor details as unemployment weighs on the nation, and invited labor and Congress to work with the White House to move forward. He praised Meany’s leadership and urged building collaboration over debate.

Cypriots storm U S embassy and protest foreign policy

Thousands of Greek Cypriots swarmed the U S Embassy in Nicosia ripping down the flag and setting portions of the building ablaze as U S Marines intervened. Protests extended to British offices amid Britain's decision to allow Turkish Cypriots to flee to Turkey. Fires were reported at American and British properties, with no U S casualties. The airlift of Turkish Cypriots from Episkopi to Adana triggered further clashes in Athens and Nicosia.

KKK leader pledges support over textbooks at Charleston rally

James R Venable of Stone Mountain, flanked by hooded Klansmen, urged protesters not to take the law into their hands as he pledged KKK aid against new school textbooks near the Kanawha County controversy. Fellow members included Dale Reusch, and Rev. Carvin Horan spoke amid rain while facing bombing charges in federal court.

CIA Defends Against Spy Charge With Open Remarks

Tentative Oil Workers Deal as Strikes Loom Nationwide

The Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union reached a tentative contract with Ashland Oil Corp while issuing strike notices to Phillips Petroleum and Cities Services Oil. OCAW says 60,000 refinery workers are involved with about 3,000 walking out and negotiations continuing past the 2 p.m. EST strike deadline with Continental Oil and Conoco.

Un-American Activities panel fades from Congress

Washington reports the House Committee on Un American Activities effectively died last week as Democrats moved to transfer its duties to the Judiciary Committee.
