Two firms seek area strip mines in West Virginia

Fluidized bed power boiler eyed for sulfur removal in WV
A fluidized bed boiler could economically remove sulfur from high sulfur West Virginia coal. The 30 million watt Pope Evans Robbins pilot plant tests mixing coal with limestone to form calcium sulfate while exiting carbon is burned at 2000 degrees. If proven scalable it promises lower costs and reduced emissions but retrofitting older plants may be impractical.
