A Kentucky captain in the Texas Indian campaign evades a war party by driving toward woods on a swift horse. The horse treks past peril as Ferguson shouts toward safety, the Indians pursuing and the prairie opening to shelter. The rider and horse press on to escape into the woods.
Captain Ferguson, pursued by hostile Indians, escapes a prairie fire by guiding his horse through flames. With wolves in pursuit, he climbs a tree, defends against predators, camps, eats wolf flesh, and later resumes his march to reach an American camp. His companions are missing and he returns home ill with a white-haired beard.
A poem laments aging and the loss of childhood, with the refrain that children must be paid for. It contrasts infant innocence and joyful play with harsh realities of adult obligations and the burden of caring for youth.
