A narrator recounts a violent night in which a coffin is placed in a cottage and a man plots to murder a child. The narrator intervenes, frees the child, exposes the culprits, and arranges for medical aid and a dramatic churchyard confrontation that ends with the child saved and the culprits punished. The piece also includes worldly notices about Mammoth Cave and various local anecdotes.
