A Superior Court judge set a Sept 26 deadline for the DA to seek a single trial for two men charged with killing Michael Jordan's father. No motion was filed, so Larry Martin Demery and Daniel Andre Green will be tried separately.
Two UNC Chapel Hill geology students working on an honors thesis unearthed a nearly complete 7-foot phytosaur skeleton near Research Triangle Park. Paleontologists say the articulated bones, including a 4-inch tooth, represent North Carolina's best preserved phytosaur find and shed light on Triassic crocodile-like reptiles.
Wilmington AP A Savannah River Site spokesman said plans were being made to unload two ships carrying nuclear waste from Europe off the North Carolina coast as a courtesy to South Carolina. The ships were sent back after South Carolina challenged the decision, with Attorney General Travis Medlock vowing to pursue Supreme Court action if the 4th Circuit rejects the appeal.
