Esper surveys Camp Lejeune hurricane damage repairs on base
United States Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Rep Greg Murphy visited Camp Lejeune on a Tuesday to review hurricane Florence damages and repair work. They toured a gutted family home on Wavell Street and questioned asbestos abatement rewiring and leaks. About 90 percent of roughly 3800 homes at Camp Lejeune and New River Air Station have been repaired. Approximately 380 homes remain unrepaired as Esper noted delays since 2018. Contractors faced shortages as many left after the storm delaying progress.
