Chicago not just crime talk wrongs and truths
Leonard Pitts Jr urges focus beyond Chicago violence to a national pattern of police killings of unarmed Black people. He cites Be R ashamed Mitchell and Laquan McDonald cases to show systemic failures, argues Black Lives Matter is a necessary, self evident truth, and rejects “Black on Black crime” as a distraction from state violence. North Carolina Economy Stumbles in August Jobs Report
The August unemployment rate fell to 6.5 percent from 8.5 percent in July, but most of the drop was a statistical artifact. About 100,000 fewer unemployed. only 28,000 found jobs, while 72,000 exited the labor force. Labor-force participation slipped to 57.5 percent, the Southeast’s steepest decline. Job counts show 350,000 fewer positions versus February, a 7.6 percent drop, the worst in the Southeast. GDP first-quarter decline 5.1 percent—worse than some peers, but better than Tennessee. Overall, NC’s recovery appears sputtering with many left behind.
