Why Wearing Flag Apparel Is Permissible in Public
Gary Dean, a U S Air Force veteran, wore a face covering depicting the American flag at a Food Lion, drawing praise and protest. Food Lion later allowed masks with the flag but no symbols or writing. The Flag Code says the flag should not be worn as apparel, but experts note no penalties exist for wearing items not made from an actual flag. Patriotism is subjective and varies by observer.
