Youth Vision wins SOS grant for after school program

A New Bern youth program, Youth Vision, received a 74,666 Save Our Schools grant to fund an after school program in Craven County. The program serves about 30 children plus 22 current participants, offering supervised recreation, arts, problem solving, homework help, conflict resolution, and transportation five days a week plus Saturday. Ed Bell, founder, says the grant aims to boost academics and self-esteem.

Invisible F-117 Stealth Jets Spotted Over Cherry Point

Two U S Air Force F 117 stealth fighters appeared over Havelock Wednesday morning but did not land. Public affairs officials confirmed the sighting at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station and said the jets merely flew away. An Air Combat Command spokesperson could not explain their presence and noted such flights are not unusual as the aircraft bounce between locations for practice.

Pamlico to Hold Hearing on TransPark Tax Fee

A public hearing is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Pamlico County Courthouse to discuss a 4 1/2 year $5 license plate fee for Pamlico County to fund its share of the Global TransPark participation. If approved, the fee would start January 1 and cover costs until other counties’ six month gap ends.

Rafts Used by Cuban Refugees Spotted Off North Carolina

Coast Guard reports floating homemade rafts about 50 miles offshore near Wrightsville Beach likely used by fleeing Cubans. Two rafts were found by fishermen near Carolina Beach as officials say no one is missing. Patrols expect more rafts drift up the East Coast during seven to ten days voyage from Cuba.

Havelock to host six city manager finalists with spouses

The city will cover lodging meals and travel for six finalists interviewing Sept 23-24 and Sept 30-Oct 1. Townsclerk Townsend said flights and spouses are included to aid in the decision, with finalists from as far as Japan New York Montana Virginia and South Carolina. Mayor Sanders hopes one of the six becomes city manager though more interviews may occur.
