Soldier Gus Hand Describes Guard Duty and Plantation Life
The diary notes Gus Hand serving guard duty at Evans Mill in early 1863 with an acting lieutenant role and a view of the plantation house, slaves, mills, and Brices Creek. He contrasts cushy officer quarters with cramped huts, recalls good meals, dangerous swamp wildlife, pay delays, and his longing for home and his Bernette wife.
