New Bern Board suspends bed and breakfast permits in historic district

The New Bern Board of Aldermen voted 4-3 to halt new special use permits for bed and breakfasts in R-6 R-8 and R-10 zones within seven blocks of the historic district. Existing B and B operators are grandfathered while one pending application remains under review.

Officer Karen Lee charged in hit and run case

Highway Patrol filed misdemeanor hit and run charges against Karen Lee of Cove City and three counts of misdemeanor child abuse. She drove the wrong way near Cove City at 3 a.m. and sideswiped a tractor trailer on US 70. No injuries reported. she is in Greensboro with a November 13 court date.

Lectures explore New Bern history across eras

Three upcoming New Bern Historical Society lectures cover John Lawson era explorations in the 1700s, the 1922 Great Fire, and New Bern’s WWII POW camp. The Last POW: Steve Tyson recounts researching a final World War II POW at Camp Battle now Glenburnie Park. Nov 6 at NC History Center, 6:30 p.m., $10 reservation donation.

SALUTE! Veterans Day Parade in Kinston Saturday

The SALUTE! A Tribute to America's Veterans parade returns to downtown Kinston on Saturday for its 19th Veterans Day celebration. Adults and children will wave flags, view patriotic posters, enjoy live music, and join a parade as part of a day honoring veterans.
