Appalachian Trail in Georgia Fully Secured as Federal Land
The Appalachian Trail through Georgia is now fully protected after a 370 acre purchase completed at Woody Gap. The Georgia effort, led by the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club and the Appalachian Trail Conference, follows a push since 1988 by the U.S. Forest Service. Georgia joins West Virginia and New Jersey in full trail protection along the 14 state corridor spanning 2,100 miles from Springer Mountain to Mount Katahdin. Remaining lands total about 20,600 acres across 44 miles.

North Carolina panel urges end to prosecutors scheduling power
A legislative committee voted 4-3 to urge the General Assembly to drop North Carolina from the two state list allowing district attorneys to schedule criminal cases. Proponents argue scheduling biases defendants into pleas or long waits, while prosecutors say calendars must be managed to handle workload. The case now faces a state Supreme Court challenge and debate over judges setting court dates.
