Sewage Spill From Oakwood Manhole Repeats Across Five Years
Cap-Havelock records show about 34,000 gallons of raw sewage mixed with rainwater poured from a manhole on Oakwood Drive into Caps Branch Creek Sunday, then into Slocum Creek and the Neuse River. Roughly 500,000 gallons have spilled from the same manhole in five years, per Lower Neuse Riverkeeper Katy Hunt. City manager Frank Bottorff declined comment. Hunt criticized the ongoing environmental problem since 2015 and noted rain triggers large spills. The NCDEQ has seldom fined the city. The earliest spill logged was November 19, 2015 at about 1,600 gallons. See SEWAGE, A3.
