Disgruntled Viet vet plans walk to capital

Donald Clark, a Vietnam veteran fighting the Veterans Administration over PTSD classification, plans to walk to Washington, D.C. to push for benefits rising from $610 to about $3,000 monthly. Sheriff Bland to retire early paving way for Monette

Craven County Sheriff C W Pete Bland will retire on November 15 to allow elected Sheriff Jerry Monette to be sworn in December. Bland, nominated for U S marshal, cites payroll timing and plans to begin the marshal job after Senate approval. Monette, already the Democratic nominee, is expected to fill the interim period.
