County weighs mosquito control funding amid increasing calls
County manager Jack Vest reports residents in Adams Creek Road area of Havelock and along N C 55 facing worsening mosquitoes due to northwest winds. The board notes last year’s $153 803 state funded epidemiology testing and sentinel chicken program costs, which would rise without state support. Commissioner Tom Mark cites budget cuts and the absence of tax increases, while acknowledging aerial spraying by Pamlico and Carteret counties and urging personal repellents. West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis are possible risks, with two West Nile cases reported in North Carolina this year. National CDC totals show 474 cases and 28 deaths. spray efforts remain contested.

Goose Creek Island unity service proceeds after Irene
Despite Hurricane Irene flooding or damaging several churches on Goose Creek Island the annual autumn unity service and follow up covered dish lunch went ahead at the community center. Residents evacuated and most gatherings moved to Hobucken United Methodist Church while some churches sheltered in place with damage and mold. Local volunteers note the service sustains island unity and memories of past storms, including past church rebuilds after Dennis Floyd and Isabel.
